A Vision for Resto Depot

My ultimate mission is to eliminate the need for emergency food services like The Depot by empowering those on the margins of society, increasing their financial resources, and ensuring their dollars go further. However, I must acknowledge the incredible work that Tasha Lackman, the Executive Director, has done with Resto Depot. It’s far more than a place for individuals with limited means to enjoy a meal—it’s a vibrant community hub, a place where fellowship thrives, and people can gather over a cup of coffee or tea to connect, relax, and enjoy a sense of belonging.

My vision is not only to preserve what Resto Depot currently offers but to expand its reach. I want to see more meals served and extend the service across additional days in the week, making it even more accessible to the community.

Unfortunately, due to recent budget constraints, Resto Depot’s operating hours have been reduced from four days a week to three. In contrast, MultiCaf, a community kitchen in Cote des Neiges, operates six days a week, offering not just meals but also free breakfasts. They charge a minimal fee of $2.50 per person and even provide seconds, which some individuals choose to take home. In addition, they serve meat-based meals nearly every day, addressing a broad range of dietary needs.

My goal is to bring a similar model of service to Resto Depot in NDG. I envision offering more frequent, nutritious meals at a low cost, similar to MultiCaf, while going a step further by incorporating live music performances every afternoon. These performances would feature local musicians, volunteering their time and talents, transforming Resto Depot into a true cultural and social centerpiece of the community. Through this expansion, Resto Depot would not only nourish the body but also enrich the soul, fostering unity and connection in NDG.
